The Lagos State Government, yesterday, said it was set to increase the Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, to N30 billion monthly in 2017 and N50 billion monthly in 2018 as well as a yearly budget size of N1 trillion by 2018. Rising from a four-day retreat for members of the State Executive Council and Body of Permanent Secretaries and heads of government agencies and parastatals in Badagry, with the theme “Reflect, Reappraise, Restrategise: Raising the Bar of Governance,” the state government said it had resolved to scale up and run efficient revenue collection machinery through the convergence of the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) operations and utilization of cutting edge technologies. In a communiqué issued at the end of the retreat and jointly read by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Steve Ayorinde; Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr Akinyemi Ashade and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Mr. Fola Adeyemi, the government said participants intensively deliberated on the six pillars of Lagos State Development Plan (LSDP) which are infrastructural development, sustainable environment, finance, economic development, social development and security and governance.
Records all-time high enrolments into JSS1
Meantime, the state government, weekend, recorded an unprecedented 168,843 pupils from both state-owned public and private schools in this year’s Primary six placement test into Junior Secondary School, JSS1. This came as the state government has approved the establishment and listing of three new public primary schools in the state. The test, which took place last Saturday in 255 designated centres across the state, showed an upsurge in the number against the140,000 pupils that sat for similar test in about 160 designated centres last year. However, the test was adjudged to be one of the best ever recorded by the state as examination materials and relevant officials arrived the venues promptly. Speaking on the exercise, Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Dr. Ganiyu Sopeyin, who monitored the exercise, described the exercise as successful. Also, the state government has approved the establishment and listing of three new public primary schools in the state. According to a memo from the School Support Services Department, the three schools are Local Government Primary School, Oke-Ishagun/Ikola, Alimosho LGEA, Community Primary School, Abule-Eko, Ikorodu LGEA and Tsangaya Primary School, Orofun, Ibeju-Lekki, LGEA. These bring the number of public primary schools in the state to 1010 spread across the 20 Local Government Education Areas in the state.
