Mandela Marathon to benefit underprivileged children

The Mandela Day Marathon will take place on the 30th of August.(SABC)

This year's Mandela Marathon will be used as an instrument of change as 50% of the proceeds will be ploughed back into community projects.

Children are among the main beneficiaries.

Seven crèches will be built in impoverished areas and about a hundred caregivers will be trained and employed.

Umgungundlovu Municipality Mayor in KwaZulu-Natal, Yusuf Bhamjee, explains: “The people that Madiba loved most were children and we are hoping that the seven magnificent crèches that we will be building…will improve the general quality of the life of our children give them an opportunity of early child learning.”

Construction will start in August and end in November this year.

This years’ marathon has an expected turnout of 13 000 participants and will take place on the 30th of August.
